Year 5
Welcome to our Year 5 class page!
Class Teacher - Mr Platt
Teaching Assistant - Miss Johnson
Year 5 is such a wonderful year!
Year 5 is the start of upper key stage two and there will be lots of new learning introduced this year as we get prepared for Year 6. The children will be stretched and challenged to achieve what they are capable of and will always be pushed to do their best. We will cover topics that range from Earth and Space, the Vikings, the Amazon Rainforest, to preparing healthy meal; there is a real variety of different learning opportunities available to the children this year. We are really looking forward to tackling each new challenge and doing our best.
Keep checking in to catch up with what the children are doing throughout the year as we will be updating our page regularly.
You can check out what we are learning this year by downloading our Curriculum Overview (the link is below).

Homework
Homework is sent home on a Monday each week. This will consist of a short maths activity and ten spellings, which should both be returned to school on a Friday. Spellings will be tested on the Friday and there may be a retest on the following Monday if more practise is required. Please help your child to practise their spellings at home.
Don't forget to access Reading Plus/Lexia and TTRS. Please ask if you experience any issues logging into these programmes or require your child's logon information. Click on the below to see our Year 5 homework expectations; there are also links to Reading Plus, Lexia and TTRS.

We have been investigating reproduction in plants in #Science
Art
In our Art topic, this half term, we will be looking at typography. We have researched and explored our artist, Louise Fili, and expressed our thoughts and feelings about her art. We have learnt what typography is and 'played' with cut out typography (which we loved!). We were really creative when designing our own typography and we made powerful visual imagery on maps. We then went on to create our own visual maps, incorporating our previous learning, which were fantastic! #Art
PE
In PE we are learning about Hockey and dodgeball. #PE
We're learning to play tennis; having good control over the racket and ball, and following in-game rules.
Humanities
We enjoyed a morning with As Creatives, learning about our Humanities topic, The Vikings - it was so much fun! #Humanities
In DT, we have been learning about where food comes from, as part of our Cooking & Nutrition topic. We created posters outlining the process that brings beef to our supermarket shelves!
We enjoyed taste-testing different Bolognese sauces this and finding out which was the healthiest. We looked at the nutritional information, before adapting a sauce recipe to create a healthy sauce for our Spaghetti Bolognese.
We designed labels and packaging for our healthy sauces - this included a name, nutritional information, use by dates, a slogan and an appealing feature, like low salt.
We loved making Spaghetti Bolognese in DT. We were chopping vegetables and ensuring our meal was healthy and nutritious!
Meeting our Year 2 Buddies
We all enjoyed reading with our buddies and listening to them read to us too!
Prayer and Liturgy
Prayer and Liturgy with our Year 2 buddies - reminding us how we can serve each other this year and shine our lights the brightest!
Music
In Music, we've been working hard to learn Bon Jovi's 'Livin' on a prayer'. We've been learning about the genre, who Bon Jovi were, musical composition and the chorus, bridge and verse sections of a song. #Music
We've been learning to play the glockenspiel alongside the music.
PSHE - Picture News
Each week, we look at what's in the news and we respond to a 'big question', which supports our PSHE curriculum. #PSHE #PictureNews
PSHE - Carbon Monoxide session

PAThS
As part of our daily practice, we celebrate all the wonderful things about each other with our PAThS Pupil of the Day!
We give our POTD compliments - this could be something they're good at, something we like about their appearance or something about their character.
Our POTD is encouraged to give their self a compliment and this is taken home for a compliment to be given at home too. #PAThS #PSHE
Breathe buddies - Asthma
Years 3,4 and 5 enjoyed an asthma friendly assembly with St Helens Wellbeing & the Breathe Buddies, focusing on breathing better together.
